Residents of Eldoret’s Elgon View Estate woke up to floodwaters at their doorsteps on Monday morning after the River Sosiani burst its banks following a night of heavy downpour. The flooding began around 5:30 a.m., quickly engulfing riverside homes and temporarily displacing several households.
The rescue mission, led by the Kenya Red Cross Society in partnership with the Uasin Gishu County Government’s Directorate of Fire and Emergency Services, used water bowsers to evacuate affected residents safely to higher ground.
Deputy Governor Evans Kapkea, accompanied by CECM roads and public works Abraham Serem, visited the scene early to oversee evacuation efforts and assess the extent of property damage as well as the overall impact on residents’ lives. He cautioned residents living along the River Sosiani to stay alert, avoid unnecessary risks, and follow instructions from emergency teams.
Later on, a joint assessment team, led by Directors Laban Kiprop (Preventive Health), Serem (Fire and Emergencies), and Emmanuel Biwott (Communications – City of Eldoret), joined the Kenya Red Cross North Rift Director, Mr. Robert Githinji, to coordinate interventions and evaluate ongoing risks.
Residents have been urged to cooperate with emergency teams as county authorities continue to intensify efforts to safeguard lives and property. The response highlights the coordinated commitment of both government and community stakeholders to protect residents and strengthen resilience against future flooding.
